This lecture will focus on the storytelling possibilities of VR and AR as well as other emerging immersive mediums through the review of cutting-edge production technologies and new platforms for engaging viewers. We will also dive into the creative and technical process behind the interactive social VR experience, ZIKR: A SUFI REVIVAL. It is an exciting time to create in these mediums, and the class will push to show new imaginative possibilities for those interested in partaking in this creative scene.

BIOGRAPHIES

JOHN FITZGERALD is an award-winning artist & technologist and cofounder of the experiential studio, Sensorium. Recent credits include: Co-creator, Zikr: A Sufi Revival (Sundance, New Frontier ’18 & IDFA DocLab ‘18) Co-creator, objects in mirror AR closer than they appear (Tribeca Storyscapes ’18) and Producer, The Sky Is A Gap (Sundance, New Frontier ’17). John’s cinematic films have screened at the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival, Berlinale Talents, and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. He has created dynamic multi-channel video mapping installations for the Panama Biennial and theater performances in Brazil and the United States; and his photographs and video art installations have been shown in a range of group and solo exhibitions around the world. John is also a visiting scholar at the MIT Media Lab’s Center for Advanced Urbanism, a visiting artist at the MIT Center for Arts, Science, and Technology, and mentor at NEW INC, the New Museum’s incubator in New York.

MATTHEW NIEDERHAUSER is an award-winning photojournalist, filmmaker, and new media artist. He also cofounded the experiential studio, Sensorium. Recent credits include: Co-creator, Zikr: A Sufi Revival (Sundance, New Frontier ’18) Co-creator, objects in mirror AR closer than they appear (Tribeca Storyscapes ’18) and Producer, The Sky Is A Gap (Sundance, New Frontier ’17).

Matthew is also a visiting scholar at the MIT Media Lab’s Center for Advanced Urbanism, a visiting artist at the MIT Center for Arts, Science, and Technology, and mentor at NEW INC, the New Museum’s incubator in New York.

IGAL NASSIMA is an artist and programmer from Istanbul, Turkey. He is the founder of Superbright, an award winning creative technology studio specializing in AR, VR, and Physical Computing experiences that are as thought-provoking as they are practical. Igal’s works have premiered around the world including the Venice Biennale, MoMA, Tribeca Festival, Sundance, and SXSW (winning the first ever Jury Selection for Future of experiences). He is an adjunct professor at NYU Tisch ITP, where he teaches Immersive Social Technology. Previously, he founded 319 Scholes, an experimental technology space, which established new voices for Net Artists and Curators in New York City.
